My brain nearly shut down after my last article on life after death in which I was connecting dots between science and medicine, the scriptures, mysticism and what have you. And I didn’t get the mental rest I needed. I think I should ask Arif Nizami my editor to give me four weeks leave to recuperate before there is a complete shutdown, both mental and physical. Or maybe I can write every fortnight until I descend back into the depths of the stupidity, cruelty and avarice of this world’s politics, economics, legal systems and every other systems, doctrines, social and political constructs and yes, religions, by which humankind or Homo sapiens specifically, for all ‘homo’ species are human. The jewel of God’s creation, as He calls........... Download the full article in pdf attachment (below)

‘Free’ children from the cyberworld

Childhood is a stage where children express ideas, are curious, have fantasies and engage in exciting activities. As they pass through this stage once in a lifetime, parents, teachers and society should provide an environment that is conducive for children to learn all that is good and morally acceptable, and to avoid the unpleasant. During this period, too, children learn an enormous amount of new things through parental guidance, role-modelling, books and play, and by exploring the environment. Adequate attention and proper guidance by ............. Download the full article in pdf attachment (below)

Returning to Islam

PEOPLE living in Muslim countries in 2013 had an average life expectancy at birth of 67 years — four years below the global average. The global average life expectancy today is much greater than in 1900 — then only 31 years. Under the medieval Islamic Caliphate, however, life expectancy of the general population was relatively high, above 35 years. This is greater than longevity figures estimated for medieval English aristocracy (30 years) and classical Rome (20 to 30 years).............. Download the full article in pdf attachment (below)

Islam open to stem cell research

THE Malaysian medical fraternity has shown a timely initiative in holding on Oct 29, 2012 the first National Stem Cell Congress, opened by Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai. As the minister highlighted, "stem cells are arguably the hottest area of research" in many parts of the world, particularly for their potential to provide regenerative cures for heart, kidney and spinal cord diseases. This is potentially the "glorious light at the end of the tunnel" for hopeful patients suffering debilitating diseases............. Download the full article in pdf attachment (below)

DURING the Golden Age of Islam (750-1258), Muslims were in the forefront in conquering knowledge through scientific research, exploration and expeditions. In their pursuit of mastering new knowledge and technology, Muslims were prepared and open to the idea of learning all that is positive from the earlier civilisations. As such, they borrowed ideas from the Indians, Persians and Greeks as a way of enriching their own civilisation. Adopt, adapt and assimilate or integrate was the approach used by early Muslim scholars in taking knowledge from those outside............ Download the full article in pdf attachment (below)

FOR our enlightenment and progress, the Muslim ummah today needs to regain the spirit of wonder of the early Muslims whose faith in God soared under inspiration from the Quranic revelations and tutelage of Prophet Muhammad. With these, Muslims could appreciate God’s mercy and benevolence in creating the universe with man in the august role as khalifah (vicegerent) and custodian of the earth and the heavens. In one inspiring verse 45:13, God says: “He has subjected to you, as from Him, all that is in the heavens and on earth.”............ Download the full article in pdf attachment (below)

Bring Back Golden Age of Science and Innovation

Amid the current turmoil in the Middle East and the ongoing negative image of Muslims in the West, it is reassuring, on a recent visit to New York City, I was able to visit the facinating exhibition "1,001 Inventions: Muslim Heritage in our World"............. I have been a mariner for many years and what makes me stand in awe of the creator is the realisation that the planets and stars consistently do what they are doing so that the navigators (on ships) of the world can navigate safely from one point to another. The elevation of the stars above the horizon, its bearings, its time of rise and set have all been tabulated. The heavenly bodies can only be tabulated by man if there is a power that holds and directs them all together with such precision............. Download the full article in pdf attachment (below)

There is an old saying that God Almighty has created three kinds of beings: angels with reason but without passion; animals with passion but without reason;and men with reason and with passion. If passion prevails over reason, then animals are better than men, but if reason prevails over passion, then men are better than angels. Nearly two centuries ago the German  philosopher Immanuel Kant predicted that eventually the world order would come about either through intellectual or moral insights or through the experience of chaos. We are still in a position to make that choice............ Download the full article in pdf attachment (below)
