Karim Douglas Crow is a Principal Research Fellow at IAIS Malaysia, and earned his Doctorate (1996 cum Laude) from the Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill University, Montreal, Canada; and his B.A. (1972 Honors) from The American University of Beirut. For over fifteen years from 1981–1997 he taught Arabic Language & Literature and Islamic religious disciplines in North America at: Columbia University, New York University, Fordham University, University of Virginia, University of Maryland, and The American University; next in Malaysia (Professor of Islamic Thought, ISTAC 1999–2005); then Singapore (Rajaratnam School of International Studies 2006–2008). His research centers on psycho-spiritual functions of faith, intelligence and rationality; ethical and metaphysical topics; the Sunnī–Shī‘ah schism; and Islamic Peace studies. He has taught graduate level courses in a wide variety of Islamic religious topics, and supervised numerous Master’s theses and Doctoral dissertations.
Current Projects involve research into ethical issues joining Muslim with Euro-American societies, and civilisational aspects of contemporary Islamic and Asian societies in the light of globalized trends. He is completing several books: American Evangelicals: Cultural Shifts, Militarism, and the Coming of Messiah; ‘When God Created Wisdom’: ‘Aql Creation Narratives in Islam (forthcoming, Leiden: Brill); and his lifetime project Lamp of Knowledge: the Career and Teaching of Ja‘far al-Sādiq (d. 148 /765 CE).
Activities & Experience. During the past fifteen years Professor Crow serves as Advisor for non-governmental programs treating Islamic peace in the Arab world, the Caucasus, Iran, and Indonesia. He is active in international organizations including Nonviolence International, United States Institute of Peace, *SALAM– Institute of Peace and Justice, Center for Global Peace, and *Program Pandidikan Damai [Peace Education Program–Aceh]. He participates in the International Society For Islamic Philosophy, and the trans-national network Council For Research In Values & Philosophy (Washington D.C. & Lebanon). [*on Board of Directors]
