On Sunday, at the Corinthian Baptist Church in Des Moines, former President Bill Clinton, looking frail and sounding faint, stumped for his wife, working through her qualifications with a husband’s devotion and a Svengali’s facility. But one thing he said stood out to me for its clear rhetorical framing. He attributed much of the anger that’s present in the electorate to anxiety over a changing demographic profile of the country, but then said: We are going to share the future. Humour Without Malice

Wang Pang, the son of Wang Anshi (a noted scholar and official of the Song dynasty) was playing at a friend's house, where there was a deer and river deer in a cage. The master of the house asked Wang Pang: "Can you tell which of the animals is a deer and which is a river deer?" Wang Pang, who was less than ten years old, was unable to distinguish the two. But he said: "The one next to the river deer is a deer, and the one next to the deer is a river deer."
