About the Speaker

Pastor Dr Alex Awad was born in Palestine in 1946 and served there for decades as a missionary of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. Alex was the pastor of the East Jerusalem Baptist Church and served as Professor, Dean of Students and Director of the Shepherd Society at Bethlehem Bible College.

Alex’s formative years were marked by the death of his father, who was killed in 1948 in the crossfire between the Israeli and Jordanian armies. After the remaining family became refugees, his mother was faced with the task of raising seven children between the ages of six months and 11 years. She worked as a nurse to single-handedly support the family.

Alex was able to attend a Bible college in Switzerland. Unable to return to his homeland because of the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, he travelled to the United States and earned degrees in biblical education and in missions and evangelism. He also met and married his wife Brenda during this time. In 1979, the Awads responded to the call to serve at the newly formed Bethlehem Bible College, where they spent six years as independent missionaries. In 1987, they were forced to leave the country because the Israeli government refused to renew their visas. In 1994, they were finally allowed to return to Palestine, where they continue to serve.

He is the author of Palestinian Memories: The Story of a Palestinian Mother and Her People (Bethlehem Bible College, 2008) and Through the Eyes of the Victims (Bethlehem Bible College, 2001), a discussion of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the perspective of Palestinians. He has also written about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for numerous newspapers and periodicals.

Quotable Quotes

Brother stand the pain; Escape the poison of your impulses. The sky will bow to your beauty, if you do. Learn to light the candle. Rise with the sun. Turn away from the cave of your sleeping. That way a thorn expands to a rose. A particular glows with the universal. Rumi

Humour Without Malice

A man went to Ibn 'Aqeel and said, "Whenever I plunge myself two to three times into a river to take a bath, I am not sure whether the water reached every part of my body, and am consequently unsure whether I have purified myself. What should I do?" He said "Do not pray." "Why do you say that?" Ibn 'Aqeel answered: "Allah's messenger [pbuh] said, 'The pen is lifted from three: from the child until he reaches adulthood, from the one who is sleeping until he wakes up, and from the insane man until he regains his senses.' And whoever plunges himself into a river once, twice and then three times, yet still feels that he has not taken a bath is insane."

Hikmah

God the Most High loves it when someone brings happiness to a believer by satisfying his hunger, dispelling his worries, or paying off his debt. (hadith)
