Zaytuna College

Zaytuna College is a non-profit, educational institution located in Berkeley, California, United States of America. It is America’s first Muslim liberal arts college founded in 2008 with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf being the co-founder and current president.

Zaytuna College seeks to incorporate the importance of the liberal arts and humanities into a traditional Islamic education curriculum. Majors at Zaytuna College include Arabic and Islamic Studies, with courses ranging from Arabic grammar and Islamic jurisprudence, to American history and literature. Zaytuna College also conducts an 8-week summer Arabic intensive.

Zaytuna College was conceived from the imperative to establish centres of Islamic learning for the Muslim-American community in the West which are equipped to interpret Islamic scriptures authoritatively and educate Western students in light of the cultural context in which they live. Zaytuna College has been recognised as an institution that has the ability to bridge the divide between America and the Muslim world.

The faculty of Zaytuna College consists of scholars of Arabic, Islamic Studies and Liberal Arts.

Zaytuna’s mission is to “serve our Lord and honour our Prophet…through providing the highest quality educational programmes, materials and training in the traditional sciences of Islam in the most beautiful way, using the most effective tools of our time”.

Zaytuna College sees itself following in a tradition of religious communities who established colleges for their communities such as Catholics and Jews. It has been compared to other private religious liberal arts schools such as Georgetown, Brandeis, Notre Dame and others.

The institution derives its name from the Arabic word Zaytuna, which means olive tree. Biblical and Qur’anic Scholars deem the olive a source of great benefit and worth.

IAIS Malaysia

The International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia was established in September 2007 in Kuala Lumpur as an independent non-profit research think-tank, with an initial grant from the government of Malaysia.

The Institute is dedicated to the rigorous pursuit of objective academic and policy research on Islam and contemporary challenges of concern to Malaysia, the global Ummah and Islam’s engagement with other civilisations. Our quest for renewal highlights the essential values and principles which resonate with the timeless significance of Islamic teachings.

IAIS Malaysia began with the challenging agenda to widen the scope of discourse through a fresh focus on Islam’s broader civilisational objectives representing the Ummah as a whole.

Firmly grounded in Islam’s authentic teachings, IAIS Malaysia aspires to facilitate the regeneration and renewal (tajdid) of Islamic civilisation rooted in the Qur’an and Sunnah. Through research into Islamic source texts bearing on significant issues facing Muslim societies, the Institute provides policy recommendations to government entities, multinational organisations and NGOs. IAIS Malaysia supports activities and projects contributing to the renewal of contemporary Islamic thought and raising the level of discourse in order to advance human wellbeing.

Quotable Quotes

Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless, Mother Teresa

Humour Without Malice

Hija purchased a sack of flour and hired a labourer to carry it. The labourer ran off with the whole sack. On seeing the labourer after a few days, Hija hid from him. "Why are you hiding from him?" the people asked. He replied, "I fear that he may ask for his wage."

Hikmah

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be on him said: "Shall I tell you who is kept away from Hell?...Everyone who is gentle and kindly, approachable and of an easy disposition." Al-Tirmidhi, hadith 1315
